Fire Displaces 150 Residents Near UC Riverside Campus

A significant fire broke out at an apartment complex near the University of California, Riverside, displacing 150 residents, including students. The fire occurred on Friday morning in the 3900 block of Iowa Avenue, affecting the upper floor and roof of the two-story building.

Cause and Response

Authorities reported that the fire was accidentally started by a contractor working on a project inside the building. The incident sent thick smoke into the sky, visible from the nearby campus. Riverside Division Chief Gregg White confirmed that about 50 of the more than 100 units were damaged in the blaze.

Emergency services responded promptly, and an evacuation center was set up at the Stratton Community Center at Bordwell Park to assist those displaced by the fire. The UC Riverside Police Department monitored the situation and advised the public to avoid the area due to traffic control measures in place for the fire response.

Impact on Students and Pets

While the affected property is not owned by UC Riverside, the university is actively working to determine how many of its students were residing in the complex and is providing necessary resources and support. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of injuries. Additionally, seven cats and one dog were rescued from the complex, ensuring the safety of both residents and their pets.

The fire’s proximity to the university’s perimeter has raised concerns among students and faculty, but the university has reassured the community that it is taking steps to support those affected.
