Finding Shared Perspective on a Road Trip Through Washington and Idaho

When Paul suggested a scenic side road on our return from northern Idaho, I realized how a simple change of route can reveal deeper truths about marriage, faith, and loss. The suggestion felt like an invitation to honor my perspective, and it turned a routine drive into a shared pilgrimage across the rolling landscapes of Washington and Idaho.

Seeing the Land Through New Eyes

Our journey began in the Kootenai Valley near Bonners Ferry, where we stayed with Paul’s cousin Brian and his wife Twila. Their Mennonite church service on Sunday reminded us of the central role of faith in community life. Twila’s garden, surrounded by a deer‑proof fence, overflowed with vegetables, towering castor‑bean plants, and bright cosmos and dahlias that later became the centerpiece of her bouquets.

Beyond the garden, the scent of fresh cow manure from their small herd evoked childhood memories of milking cows on a well‑grazed pasture. The simplicity of that rural setting contrasted sharply with the vast, orderly fields of corn and alfalfa we later saw in central Washington, each marked by a center‑pivot irrigator turning like a giant clock hand.

A Landscape of Contrast and Connection

Driving eastward, the highway twisted through two‑lane roads flanked by endless hop fields and apple orchards. The brown ridge to our right rose like a silent guardian over the valley. Despite the heavy traffic, we passed miles of cultivated land without seeing a single house, underscoring how the land can feel both intimate and vast.

In Washington, the sky seemed to stretch forever over milo, grapes, and Red Delicious apples. The rain‑kissed earth after a dry spell sparked an instant connection, reminding us that nature’s rhythms bind us together, no matter where we travel.

Shared Grief, Shared Hope

Our conversation with Brian and Twila turned deeply personal. Both families belong to the painful, exclusive club of parents who have lost a child. Our son Steven passed away in November, and Brian and Twila’s oldest daughter Ramona died suddenly in April. In that shared sorrow, we found a common language of grief that was both identical and uniquely personal.

Listening to each other’s questions and stories, we discovered that while our paths of mourning intersect, they also diverge in ways that honor each family’s individual journey. The evening ended with a sense of validation and care that lingered long after we left the garden gate.

Learning to Speak Each Other’s Inner Language

Forty years ago, I would have balked at Paul’s suggestion to take a side road. Back then, I interpreted his literal‑mindedness as rejection. Over time, however, I have learned to articulate my needs clearly and to appreciate his willingness to accommodate my curiosity, even if it means a later arrival.

That night, as we drove the small road north of the Columbia River Gorge, I felt gratitude for the route he chose—not just for the scenery, but for the respect it showed for my inner landscape. The journey reminded me that marriage is a continual process of seeing life through each other’s eyes, and that those perspectives are both valid and enriching.

Faith, Family, and the Open Road

Our trip reinforced three pillars that guide our lives: a Christian faith that steadies us in grief, a commitment to family that encourages us to listen, and a belief in individual liberty that lets us choose the roads we travel—both literal and metaphorical. As we returned home, the fields of Washington and Idaho lingered in our minds, a reminder that every side road can lead to deeper understanding.
