A fighter jet crashed at MCAS Miramar military base Friday morning. The F-35, assigned to 3rd Marine Aircraft Group 11, crashed around 10 a.m. and sparked a fire in a field on base, according to a spokesperson for the military base.
The aircraft carried only the pilot, but the spokesperson did not disclose whether there were any injuries. Footage showed a plane in at least two pieces amid a football-field-sized patch of scorched earth. The cause of the crash, which occurred several feet away from the runway, was not immediately clear.
