FIFA President Infantino Confirms He Will Run for Another Term in 2027

In a statement released on Sunday, FIFA confirmed that President Gianni Infantino will again stand for election in 2027. The announcement comes after a turbulent six weeks that saw the soccer governing body abandon a controversial proposal to sell a 20% stake in the World Cup and other FIFA competitions to private investors.

Backlash Over Stake Sale Plan

Infantino’s plan, unveiled in April, sparked immediate opposition from several of football’s regional bodies, including UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and CONCACAF. Critics argued that commercializing a portion of the World Cup would jeopardize the sport’s integrity and undermine the principle that the tournament belongs to fans and member associations, not private shareholders.

Following the backlash, FIFA scrapped the proposal in July. The decision did not quell the calls for Infantino’s resignation, but it did not diminish the support he still enjoys from the African and South American confederations, which have publicly reaffirmed their backing.

Infantino’s Own Remarks

While attending the U‑20 World Cup in Poland, Infantino was asked whether he regretted the recent controversy. He responded that “there will be a lot to say, but there will be a right place and a right time to say this,” indicating that he plans to address the issue more fully at a later date.

Despite the criticism, the FIFA spokesperson reiterated that nothing has changed regarding Infantino’s candidacy: “The FIFA president announced in April that he will stand for re‑election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr. Infantino will be standing for re‑election.”

No Official Challenger Yet

As of now, no other candidate has formally declared an intention to run against Infantino in the 2027 election. The lack of a declared opponent suggests that the upcoming vote may remain largely a referendum on Infantino’s leadership and the reforms he has championed during his tenure.

Infantino, 56, has been at the helm of FIFA since 2016 and was re‑elected in 2019. His administration has overseen the expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams beginning in 2026, as well as a series of governance reforms aimed at increasing transparency and financial accountability within the organization.

What This Means for Global Soccer

The upcoming election will be closely watched by national federations, clubs, players and fans worldwide. Supporters argue that continuity in leadership will help FIFA navigate the complexities of a growing global sport, while detractors contend that fresh leadership is needed to restore confidence after the recent misstep.

Regardless of the outcome, the 2027 FIFA presidential race will shape the direction of the sport’s most lucrative events, its governance structures, and its relationship with commercial partners for years to come.
