Non-profit fan network Football Supporters Europe (FSE) has opposed FIFA’s proposal to sell a stake in the World Cup and called for reform in the world soccer body amid widespread criticism of the plan.
UEFA Nations Unite in Opposition
UEFA nations have unanimously voted to boycott the World Cup and other FIFA tournaments over the proposal, with the Asian and North-American confederations expressing solidarity with the European countries. FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned in protest.
Stuart Dykes, FSE’s director of European and Institutional Affairs, said the fans were also outraged by FIFA’s proposal, stating that “football is not for sale” and that its value is created by the fans and players, not for private investors to extract.
Dykes criticized the lack of transparency behind the initiative, saying that decisions of this nature cannot be taken behind closed doors by a small number of people, many of whom are not even involved in football. He called for FIFA to reform itself, citing the need for greater transparency and accountability.
