Fells Hardwood Supply Offers Expertise and Quality to Central Texas Woodworkers

In the heart of Hutto, Texas, Fells Hardwood Supply is making waves among local woodworkers by offering not just quality materials, but also hands-on expertise. Founded by Jamie and David Fells, the business emerged from a realization that many local lumber suppliers lacked practical woodworking knowledge.

After starting their venture in April 2025 by selling wood from their garage, the couple opened a brick-and-mortar location in Hutto last April. Their store provides hobbyists and professionals alike with access to premium woods, custom pieces, and in-person woodworking education. Jamie and David, both of whom took shop classes in high school, wanted to make woodworking more accessible and affordable in Central Texas.

Filling a Local Knowledge Gap

Jamie Fells noted that many other supply shops in the area are staffed by individuals who are not woodworkers themselves. “It’s just a sales job for them,” Jamie said. “They’ll tell you whatever they need to sell stuff. And that’s not what it is here.” The Fells’ approach is different, offering genuine expertise and a personal touch.

The shop specializes in exotic woods, with canarywood being a highlight for many customers. Domestic walnut and olive are also popular choices. Jamie crafts kitchen utensils, bookmarks, and coasters, while David focuses on larger items like shelves, desks, tables, and cutting boards.

Hands-On Education

In addition to selling materials, Fells Hardwood Supply offers woodworking classes. David has already conducted classes on hand tools and dovetail techniques, with plans to offer two to four classes a month. “It’s been popular so far,” Jamie said, emphasizing the value of in-person learning in an age where many rely on online videos.

Looking to the future, the Fells hope to expand their business. “We’re a very small mom-and-pop business and we are funding this pretty much ourselves, so we just have to be patient and let the business grow,” Jamie explained.
