Fed Report Shows Household Income Up, Debt Stress Rises to 2013 Levels

The Federal Reserve’s latest triennial Survey of Consumer Finances paints a mixed picture for American families. From 2022 through 2025, median family income—adjusted for inflation—rose 7% to $82,200, and median net worth increased 2% to $215,900. Those gains were broadly shared, with households at the lower end of the income distribution seeing the largest percentage increases, reflecting a post‑pandemic labor market that still favored workers in many service‑sector jobs.

Debt‑to‑Income Stress Reaches 2013 High

Despite the income and wealth gains, the survey also shows a growing segment of families feeling financial pressure. The share of families whose debt‑payment‑to‑income ratio reached 40% or more rose from 6.5% in 2022 to 8.6% in 2025—the highest level recorded since 2013. The Fed described this as an “increasing subset of families” experiencing financial stress amid “moderate economic expansion and elevated inflation.”

Uneven Wealth Trends

Overall wealth rose, but the distribution of that growth was uneven. While most families across the net‑worth spectrum saw increases, Black non‑Hispanic families experienced a 25% decline in median net worth, even though their average net worth grew about 5%. Families in the bottom quartile of wealth saw their median net worth fall from $3,800 to $1,700, reversing a trend of gains that had persisted since 2013.

Homeownership and Stock‑Market Participation

The homeownership rate held steady at roughly 66%, indicating continued stability in the housing market. However, participation in the stock market slipped slightly, dropping from 58% of households in 2022 to 56% in 2025, suggesting a modest retreat from equity exposure amid lingering inflation concerns.

Survey Methodology

The Fed’s findings are based on a national sample of 4,367 households surveyed primarily between April and December 2025. The data provide a snapshot of how families are navigating the transition from the pandemic’s emergency measures to a more ordinary economic environment marked by tighter labor markets and higher price pressures.

What This Means for Families

For many families, especially those with lower incomes, the modest rise in earnings and net worth offers a welcome boost. Yet the increase in debt‑to‑income stress highlights the importance of prudent budgeting and the need for policies that keep inflation in check while supporting household financial health. As the Fed continues to monitor these trends, families can look to both personal financial planning and broader economic stability as key factors in maintaining prosperity.
