FDA to Consider Making Peptides More Accessible

A new survey suggests that 83% of peptide-aware Americans want the FDA to make peptides more accessible. The survey, conducted by Hone Health, found that the majority of respondents support allowing licensed compounding pharmacies to produce popular peptides with a physician’s prescription.

What are Peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that can have various health and wellness benefits. However, many peptides are currently only available through unregulated grey-market sources, which can pose serious health risks to consumers.

Abid Husain, M.D., a triple-board-certified physician specializing in peptide therapy, says that the FDA’s decision could open a safer pathway for consumers. “Right now, most people can’t get these compounds in a safe, controlled manner, so they get them however they can,” says Husain. “And that means putting themselves at exceptional risk.”

The FDA’s Decision

The Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC) will consider whether to add seven peptides to the 503A Bulks List. If added, licensed pharmacists and physicians can use them in patient-specific compounded prescriptions.

The FDA will consider the committee’s recommendations, as well as public comments, before making a final decision. If the FDA moves these peptides to the 503A Bulks List, it doesn’t mean they are approved as drugs, but it would allow physicians to prescribe them for various uses, including athletic or cognitive performance.
