FBI Executes Search of Former Rep. Eric Swalwell’s Home in Sexual Misconduct Probe

The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted a search of former Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell’s Washington, D.C., residence over the weekend, seizing computers, phones and other electronic equipment. Agents also collected devices from Swalwell’s luggage at San Francisco International Airport, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

Background of the investigation

Swalwell, who left Congress in April 2024 after four women accused him of sexual assault and of sending unsolicited explicit images, has denied the allegations. He publicly apologized for what he called “mistakes in judgment,” but maintains that the claims are false and has pledged to fight them in court.

Following the accusations, Swalwell withdrew from the 2026 California gubernatorial race, ending a brief campaign that had positioned him as a leading contender. The former lawmaker’s resignation from the House of Representatives also came amid the growing controversy.

Law‑enforcement actions in multiple jurisdictions

In addition to the FBI raid, local law‑enforcement agencies in New York and Los Angeles have opened their own investigations into the alleged assaults. The Department of Homeland Security has reportedly examined claims that Swalwell illegally employed a Brazilian nanny, though details of that inquiry have not been released.

Swalwell’s legal counsel has not yet responded to requests for comment on the recent FBI action.

Political context

Swalwell rose to national prominence as a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump and served on the House Intelligence Committee. He first won election to Congress in 2012 and later launched an exploratory presidential bid in 2019. His fall from grace underscores the heightened scrutiny of elected officials facing personal misconduct allegations.

The FBI’s involvement signals that the federal government considers the allegations serious enough to warrant a full‑scale investigation, including the seizure of digital evidence that could be used in potential criminal or civil proceedings.

What comes next?

Authorities have not disclosed whether any charges will be filed. The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are expected as prosecutors review the seized material. Observers note that the case may have broader implications for how political figures are held accountable for personal conduct.

For now, the focus remains on the legal process, with both federal and local agencies coordinating their inquiries. The outcome will likely influence public perception of Swalwell’s legacy and could affect future discussions about ethical standards for public servants.
