Fayetteville Offers Free Summer Meals to Support Families

In Fayetteville, the return of the free summer meal program by Fayetteville Public Schools is a welcome relief for many families. This initiative, which began on Monday, offers free meals to anyone aged 18 and younger, ensuring that children have access to nutritious food even when school cafeterias are closed for the summer.

Parents like Bek Seitov express gratitude for the program’s return, highlighting its importance in easing the financial burden during the summer months. ‘I’m so excited that this program started again this year,’ Seitov shared, noting that with three children, the program significantly helps manage their summer budget.

The program is not only a financial relief but also a convenient option for families. Freshman student Vivek Kumari and his family, who live within walking distance of a meal site, have made picking up meals a summer tradition. ‘The biscuits and the pizza bites are pretty good,’ Kumari commented, while his parent, Mamta Kumari, emphasized the savings on both food and gas.

Meals are available on weekdays through July 31 at various locations across Fayetteville. The district serves traditional school lunches at four locations, with three sites featuring a food truck:

  • 11 to 11:30 a.m. at American Legion, 1195 S Curtis Ave.
  • 12 to 12:30 p.m. at Yvonne Richardson Community Center, 240 E Rock St.
  • 1 to 1:30 p.m. at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 764 W. North St.

Additionally, meals are available at Owl Creek Elementary School from 10:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. According to Amy Jefferson, the child nutrition director, the program serves nearly 500 meals daily, underscoring its vital role in the community.
