Covid Vaccine and Pregnancy
In one exchange, Dr. Vivek Murthy asked Fauci about potential risks to pregnant individuals. Fauci responded that there was no data to suggest vaccinating early versus later in pregnancy would be preferred, but noted that a cytokine storm and fever after the second dose could theoretically be associated with miscarriage in the first trimester.
Dr. Rochelle Walensky, then-director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agreed with Fauci’s assessment. The CDC later recommended that pregnant individuals receive the vaccine, citing data that showed no increased risks of miscarriage or other safety concerns.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists still recommends that pregnant individuals receive annual Covid-19 vaccines. The released texts also show Fauci discussing the importance of weighing the potential risks and benefits of vaccination during pregnancy.
