A 43-year-old Colorado truck driver, Roberto Barberena Gavidia, died in a crash near Laramie, Wyoming, early Monday. According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol Department, Gavidia was driving a commercial vehicle along Highway 287 when he began to cross into the southbound lane and ultimately drove off the left side of the road.
His truck hit the guardrail leading up to a bridge and, with either side of his vehicle on either side of the guardrail, began driving over it. A piece of the railing struck one of the truck’s fuel tanks, causing the truck to roll off the bridge and into the embankment on the left side of the road, coming to a rest on the truck’s roof.
The truck then combusted into flames. Gavidia was killed in the crash. Another occupant of the vehicle survived with injuries. Investigators determined that Gavidia likely fell asleep or was extremely fatigued behind the wheel.
This death marks the 50th road fatality in Wyoming this year, which is the highest to-date number of deaths in the state since 2023. The Wyoming Highway Patrol Department advises that information may be subject to change as the investigation continues.
