Fatal Highway 82 crash in Barbour County claims Florida passenger, injures Massachusetts traveler

BARBOUR COUNTY, Ala. – A tragic traffic collision on U.S. Highway 82 claimed the life of a passenger and left another seriously injured early Thursday morning. State Troopers identified the driver as 35‑year‑old Josue Joseph of Union Springs, who was operating a van that veered off the roadway near the town of Midway.

Sequence of events

According to the Alabama Highway Patrol, the van departed the paved surface just before 4:30 a.m., entered a ditch, collided with a tree and subsequently rolled over. The impact was severe enough to cause the vehicle to overturn multiple times.

Victims

The crash resulted in the death of 46‑year‑old Simeon Onnette, a resident of Lauderhill, Florida, who was a passenger in the van. Another passenger, 44‑year‑old Jean‑Charles Fausnert of Leominster, Massachusetts, sustained injuries and was transported to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery for treatment. Troopers have not released further details about the condition of the injured passenger.

Investigation

State Troopers are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Factors under review include road conditions, vehicle maintenance, and possible driver impairment. No arrests have been made at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Community response

The incident has prompted local officials and community leaders to reiterate the importance of safe driving practices, especially on rural highways that can be hazardous after dark. Sheriff’s deputies in Barbour County have urged motorists to observe speed limits, avoid distractions, and ensure that vehicles are properly maintained.

Safety reminders

Residents traveling on U.S. Highway 82 are reminded to use seat belts at all times, keep headlights on in low‑visibility conditions, and remain vigilant for wildlife or debris that may appear on the roadway. The Alabama Department of Transportation continues to monitor the stretch of highway for any needed improvements.

Next steps

The Alabama Highway Patrol will release additional information as the investigation progresses. Families of the victims have been notified, and counseling services are being offered to those affected by the tragedy.
