More than a year after 31‑year‑old James Milton was shot and killed at an apartment complex on Edgewood Drive in Nicholasville, his family is still waiting for answers. Milton was killed on Oct. 2, 2025, after a dispute that led him to force his way into an apartment, according to Nicholasville police.
Police say the shooter claimed Milton entered the apartment after a verbal argument the night before. When Milton kicked in the door, the gunman opened fire, killing Milton and injuring his mother, Samantha Milton, who was trying to bring her son home.
Family’s ongoing grief
James’s sister, Jamie Milton, says the loss has left a lasting void. “It’s not been the same at all,” she told LEX News. “I used to get random messages from James—‘Hey sis, I love you,’—and now I hear nothing. It’s been really hard.”
Jamie added that the lack of resolution has been “just like everything has been at a standstill, and nothing is moving forward.” She hopes the grand jury will bring charges and that her brother will receive the justice she believes he deserves.
Police update
LEX News reached out to Nicholasville police for an update. Officers confirmed the case is awaiting a grand jury hearing, which they expect to occur soon. The grand jury will decide whether to file charges against the suspect.
Call for an end to gun violence
Jamie also used the occasion to speak out against firearms violence. “Honestly, put the guns down,” she said. “Guns are not the way to solve a problem in any way, shape, or form. Too many innocent lives are being taken because of negligence and people with guns.”
The Milton family’s patience underscores the broader concern many Kentucky families feel about safety and accountability in their neighborhoods. While the investigation proceeds, the community watches closely, hoping for a swift grand jury decision that will bring closure to a grieving family.
