Family honors Bucks County 9/11 victim Joshua Reiss on 25th anniversary

Lower Makefield Township, Bucks County – As the nation marks 25 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Reiss family gathered to remember their beloved son and brother, Joshua Reiss, who was killed while working on the 105th floor of the North Tower.

Personal reflections from a grieving mother

Judi Reiss, Joshua’s mother, described the lingering pain of losing a child who lived only 23 years. “It’s hard to wrap my arms around 25 years. Josh only lived 23. I look at everything that was taken from him – taken from all of us,” she said. She recalled his bright smile and his habit of encouraging others to live fully. “Josh would have said to me: Don’t cry, don’t be sad – get even. And to be getting even would be living the best life I can,” Judi explained, adding that for her, living the best life means giving back and making the world a little better.

A brother’s perspective

Jon Reiss, who was 15 when the attacks occurred, spoke about the lasting impact on his family. “It’s still very surreal and what really gets to me after all these years is how much Josh is missed,” he said. Jon noted that his siblings now have children, and this year his two daughters are learning about their late uncle for the first time. He remembered Joshua’s love for his family, his zest for life, and his devotion to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Advocacy and remembrance

Judi has turned her grief into advocacy, remaining active in the 9/11 lawsuits and supporting the creation of the Garden of Reflection in Lower Makefield Township. The garden, a peaceful space dedicated to the 18 Bucks County residents who perished on that day, will host a memorial service to honor their memory.

Community gathering

The upcoming service at the Garden of Reflection will bring together families, friends, and local officials to pay tribute to those lost and to celebrate the resilience of the community. The event underscores the importance of remembering the personal stories behind a national tragedy and highlights the ongoing commitment of Bucks County residents to honor their loved ones.

As the Reiss family reflects on Joshua’s legacy, they encourage others to find purpose in service and to keep the memory of the fallen alive through acts of kindness and community involvement.
