Fall Travel Prices Rise but Six U.S. Destinations Still Offer Savings

National travel data shows that the traditional shoulder‑season discounts are fading. Expedia’s 2026 Fall Travel Outlook reports lodging prices at the ten most‑visited U.S. destinations are about 20% higher than in summer, while airfare has risen roughly 2%.

“Shoulder season is not a given this year, but value is still out there if travelers know where to look,” said Melanie Fish, head of public relations for Expedia Group Brands.

Where the Deals Remain

Expedia highlights six markets where the combined cost of airfare and lodging is still lower than summer rates, averaging about a 25% overall reduction.

  • Aspen, Colorado – Travel costs are roughly 45% below summer levels, offering cooler temperatures, autumn foliage, and mountain scenery before the peak ski season.
  • Anchorage, Alaska – Combined expenses sit about 40% lower than in summer, with milder weather, changing leaves, and fewer peak‑season visitors.
  • Fort Walton Beach, Florida – Prices are about 30% less than summer, giving a beach‑like escape for those reluctant to give up warm weather.
  • San Diego, California – Savings of approximately 15% compared with summer travel.
  • Honolulu, Hawaii – Costs are roughly 10% lower than during the peak summer months.
  • Bozeman, Montana – Travelers can expect about a 5% reduction in combined travel expenses.

How to Find the Best Fall Deals

Flexibility remains key. Expedia’s Flight Deals tool flags fares at least 20% below predicted prices, and the company advises monitoring both airfare and package rates before booking. Members can set price alerts for specific routes, and bundling flight and hotel often yields savings of several hundred dollars, though results vary by itinerary.

Airbnb’s 2026 fall travel report shows 60% of U.S. adults plan a weekend getaway this season, and the platform recorded more fall weekend trips in 2025 than any other season. Additionally, 90% of Gen Z respondents expressed interest in small towns and lesser‑known destinations.

Travelers are encouraged to consider shorter trips—two or three nights—and to compare multiple weekend options. By staying open to less‑traditional locations and adjusting dates, budget‑conscious vacationers can still enjoy the season without paying summer prices.
