Fall City’s own pastry chef, Caleb King, is currently showcasing his talent on the national stage as a contestant on Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship. The 12th season of the series, which premiered on September 14, features ten bakers competing for a $25,000 prize through a series of themed, spooky baking challenges.
Local roots, national spotlight
King, who grew up in central New York, moved to the Pacific Northwest in 2012 to attend Seattle Culinary Academy’s pastry program. After stints at the Four Seasons and other fine‑dining establishments, he joined the team at Treehouse Kitchen in Fall City about a year and a half ago. Treehouse Kitchen, a sister operation to the popular Treehouse Point café, opened its doors on September 12 and quickly became a community favorite for its inventive desserts.
“When Food Network reached out, it was a no‑brainer,” King said. “I grew up watching shows like Ace of Cakes, dreaming of one day having my own shop like Duff Goldman. This was a chance to turn that childhood fantasy into reality.”
Behind the scenes of the competition
King notes that the experience has been as much about camaraderie as it has been about competition. “There’s so much they don’t show on TV – the downtime, joking around, lifting each other up,” he explained. Contestants live together in a hotel, share meals, and support one another through the intense pressure of timed challenges.
One of the biggest takeaways for King has been a renewed confidence in his own abilities. In the September 21 episode, he told a fellow competitor, “You’re here for a reason,” emphasizing the importance of believing in oneself. “That was probably the biggest lesson I took away,” he added.
What’s next for King?
Although the competition is still ongoing – the next episode airs on September 28 – King says the exposure has already opened doors. “It definitely checked off the list,” he said, referring to his long‑standing goal of appearing on a national cooking show. “But now the list grows.” He hopes the experience will bring more visitors to Treehouse Kitchen and inspire other local bakers to pursue their dreams.
Fall City residents can look forward to seeing King’s creations on national television and may soon have the chance to taste his Halloween‑themed treats when the bakery rolls out a limited‑time menu inspired by the show.
