Falcons name Tua Tagovailoa starting quarterback for Week 1 vs. Steelers

The Atlanta Falcons have officially named Tua Tagovailoa as the starting quarterback for their Week 1 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. This marks the sixth different Week 1 starter the franchise has used in as many seasons, underscoring the team’s ongoing quest for stability at the most important position.

Why Tagovailoa earned the nod

Tagovailoa, 28, earned the starting role after the 2025 starter, Michael Penix Jr., suffered a torn ACL in November and was not cleared for full practice until the final week of training camp. Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees praised Tagovailoa’s veteran poise, saying, “He can see the field really well, and if the defense makes a mistake, he can see that and exploit it.”

Tagovailoa’s career at a glance

Selected by the Miami Dolphins with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Tagovailoa appeared in 78 games (76 starts) and compiled a 44‑32 record as a starter. He completed 68% of his passes for 18,166 yards, 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions. His most productive season came in 2023 when he led the league with 4,624 passing yards and helped Miami finish 11‑6, though the team fell 26‑7 to the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild‑card round.

Last season, Tagovailoa posted a 6‑8 record, throwing for 2,660 yards, 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. The Dolphins signed him to a four‑year, $212.4 million extension in July 2024, but released him in March 2025, leaving a record $99.2 million in dead‑cap space.

Falcons’ contract and expectations

Atlanta signed Tagovailoa to a one‑year, $1.3 million contract, a modest deal that reflects both the team’s fiscal prudence and its belief that his experience can guide a young offense. The Falcons finished the 2025 season 8‑9 and have brought in former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski to lead the club, hoping his disciplined approach will translate into on‑field success.

What the Steelers bring

The Steelers entered the season at 10‑7 in 2025 and will be led by veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has announced that this will be his final season. Rodgers will be reunited with former head coach Mike McCarthy, who replaced longtime Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. Tomlin has stepped away from coaching and now works for NBC Sports.

Looking ahead

Falcons fans will be watching closely to see if Tagovailoa can translate his veteran instincts into a winning start for Atlanta. With a new head coach, a fresh offensive philosophy, and a quarterback eager to prove his worth, the season opener promises to be a pivotal moment for a franchise seeking to return to the playoffs.

Stay tuned for post‑game analysis and updates on how the Falcons’ offense performs under Tagovailoa’s leadership.
