Falcon 9 set to launch USSF‑259 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base Tuesday night

Vandenberg Space Force Base in California is preparing for a Falcon 9 launch of the classified USSF‑259 mission on Tuesday, Sep. 15. The launch window runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific Time, and a backup window has been set for the same time on Wednesday, Sep. 16, should conditions on Tuesday prove unsuitable.

Launch details and webcast

The mission will lift off from Space Launch Complex 4E. SpaceX will stream a live webcast beginning about ten minutes before liftoff, available on the company’s X (formerly Twitter) account and through the linked online feed. Residents in the surrounding area may hear one or more sonic booms as the vehicle ascends, though the distance the sound travels will depend on weather and other launch‑time conditions.

Booster recovery

Following first‑stage separation, the Falcon 9 booster assigned to this flight will attempt a controlled return to Earth, targeting a landing on the autonomous drone ship Of Course I Still Love You stationed in the Pacific Ocean. This will be the thirteenth flight for the first‑stage booster, which previously supported missions such as Sentinel‑6B, Twilight, NROL‑172, Transporter‑17, and eight Starlink deployments.

Mission purpose

The payload for USSF‑259 remains classified, as confirmed by the Space Force to the news outlet that originally reported the launch. While specific details are not public, the mission is part of the United States Space Force’s ongoing effort to maintain and expand its orbital capabilities.

Local impact and safety

Vandenberg’s community has become accustomed to regular launch activity, and local authorities have coordinated with SpaceX to ensure safety protocols are in place. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local news channels and the live webcast for real‑time updates.

What’s next

If the launch proceeds as scheduled, the mission will join a growing roster of Space Force operations launched from Vandenberg, reinforcing the base’s role as a key hub for national security space endeavors. Should weather or technical issues delay the launch, the backup window on Sep. 16 offers a second opportunity to achieve mission objectives.

Space enthusiasts and local observers can watch the launch live online, and the Space Force will release further details about the mission’s outcome once the classified payload has been deployed.
