Fairfield – In a heartfelt address to the city council on Monday night, longtime public servant Steve Miller announced his resignation as mayor of Fairfield. Miller, who has been involved in city government since 1997, said the decision was difficult but necessary as he feels his enthusiasm for the role has waned in recent months.
Decades of Service
Miller’s tenure in Fairfield politics spans more than three decades. He first won a seat on the city council in 1997, was appointed vice mayor in 2004, and served an eight‑year stretch as mayor beginning in 2014. He was re‑elected to his current term last November after another successful campaign.
“I love this city and I love this job,” Miller told council members. “If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have been here for so long. This place means everything to me, but I’ve realized that over the years, especially the last few months, I’m starting to lose some of the passion and fire that I’ve always had.”
Council’s Response and New Leadership
Councilmember Matthew Davidson praised Miller’s long‑standing dedication, calling his leadership “exemplary” and noting that Miller “has sacrificed so much to make this community better.” The council unanimously voted to appoint Councilman Tim Meyers as the new mayor.
“Having Tim Meyers replace Steve was a very easy decision for council,” Davidson said. “Tim brings years of experience as a council member and a leader of the city. His passion for our community, his faith in Jesus as a devout Christian, his corporate philosophy and his leadership will allow council and, more importantly, the City of Fairfield to continue moving in a positive direction.”
Future Plans
Miller indicated he plans to spend more time in Florida after stepping down, though he emphasized his continued love for Fairfield and its residents. He remains a lifelong resident, having graduated from Fairfield High School in 1983.
The council’s swift transition aims to maintain stability in city operations and ensure that ongoing projects—ranging from infrastructure improvements to community outreach programs—remain on schedule.
