Fadensonnen Isn’t the Only Game in Highlandtown

The Baltimore Jewelry Center shares a building with a pierogi shop and a print studio. That alone tells you something about Highlandtown.

I stumbled into the BJC on a Saturday afternoon after a friend mentioned she’d taken a ring-making class there and come out with something she actually wears. I was skeptical in the way you get skeptical when someone raves about a class — I figured it would be beginner-friendly in the way that means imprecise and forgiving. It’s not. The Baltimore Jewelry Center is a full working studio on the second floor of a building on Eastern Avenue, and the people using it are serious. Some are students. Some are working jewelers renting bench time. A few are somewhere in between, teaching themselves silversmithing on weekends because they want to make their own things and can’t find another place in the city that will let them.

The space runs workshops at almost every skill level: intro to sawing and soldering, stone setting, wax carving for cast pieces, chain-making. Prices for a single workshop usually run $75–$150 depending on length and materials, which is reasonable once you realize the fee covers equipment access, instructor time, and often a small supply kit. They also offer open studio memberships for people who already know what they’re doing and just need bench space, a torch, and a flex shaft. It’s the kind of infrastructure that used to exist only inside art schools.

What I noticed when I visited was that the room smelled like flux and metal, which I found unexpectedly appealing. Six or seven people were working at individual benches along the windows, most of them quiet and focused. The instructors moved around without hovering. Nobody was performing enthusiasm. A woman near me was fabricating a small pendant from sheet silver — cutting, filing, checking the fit of a bezel — and she’d clearly done this before. I asked her how she’d found the place. She said a friend told her about it and she’d been coming for two years.

That’s more or less how the BJC operates: through word of mouth, through the small ecosystem of Baltimore makers who know where to find each other. The center opened in 2014, and in the years since it’s become something of an anchor for people who work with metal in this city. It’s not a gallery. It doesn’t sell finished pieces. What it sells is access — to tools, to instruction, to a room full of people who are making things by hand and taking that seriously.

If you want to just browse, there isn’t much to see from the outside. But if you’re curious about learning to make jewelry and you want to do it somewhere that won’t dumb it down for you, the BJC is worth a look at their class schedule. The intro workshops fill up, so register early. Highlandtown is walkable from the Conkling Street area, and there’s street parking on Eastern if you drive. Go hungry — the neighborhood has good options within a few blocks, and you’ll want something to do with your hands after spending two hours using them.
