Fact Check: Trump’s Remarks on Iran, Economy, and More

During a recent Cabinet meeting, President Donald Trump made several statements that have sparked discussion and require clarification. His comments covered a range of topics, including Iran’s military capabilities, the economy, and infrastructure projects.

Iran’s Military Capabilities

President Trump claimed that Iran’s military capabilities were nearly obliterated, stating, “Their navy is gone, their air force is gone, everything’s gone.” However, U.S. intelligence assessments indicate that while significant damage has been inflicted, Iran retains some military capabilities, including missile launchers and drones.

Economic Claims

Regarding the U.S. economy, Trump mentioned seeing gas prices as low as $1.85 per gallon during a visit to Iowa. However, data from AAA and GasBuddy suggest that the average price was higher, with only a few stations offering prices under $2. Additionally, Trump’s claim of achieving drug price reductions of 400% to 600% is mathematically impossible, as a 100% reduction would mean drugs are free.

Investment in the U.S.

Trump also spoke of $18 trillion in investments coming into the U.S. during his presidency. The White House’s own figures suggest a much lower number, around $10.6 trillion, which includes vague pledges rather than concrete investments.

Reflecting Pool Project

Trump’s administration is investing over $13 million in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He incorrectly stated that previous administrations spent “hundreds of millions” on it. Records show the Obama administration spent about $35 million, and the Biden administration did not proceed with a major project.
