A United Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger attempted to open the cabin door. The Embraer 175 regional jet, operated by Mesa Airlines, landed safely in Indianapolis and the disruptive passenger was deplaned.
Incident Details
The flight, which was headed to Houston, was in the air for only 15 minutes before the incident occurred. The pilot informed air traffic controllers that a passenger was trying to open the cabin door and that other passengers were trying to restrain him.
The aircraft was able to land safely and taxied to the gate, where the passenger was removed and detained by airport police. The flight later continued on to its destination, arriving nearly two hours late.
This incident is one of many recent cases of unruly passengers on flights. The FAA has reported over 830 such incidents so far this year, with some resulting in criminal charges and civil penalties exceeding $43,000.
