Extreme Heat Warning Extended Through Wednesday as UTD Move‑In Day Continues

The National Weather Service announced Wednesday that the Extreme Heat Warning covering most of North Texas will remain in effect until at least 8 p.m. This extension follows a stretch of late‑summer heat that has pushed afternoon highs above 105 °F and is expected to continue through the end of the week.

Impact on University of Texas at Dallas Move‑In Day

Despite the sweltering conditions, the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) proceeded with its scheduled move‑in day on Tuesday. University officials took steps to limit exposure to the heat for families and student coordinators. Cars were allowed to pull up directly to the unloading zones, enabling parents to place belongings into large bins before returning to their air‑conditioned vehicles. Peer advisors were equipped with ample water and portable fans, and the campus provided shaded areas wherever possible.

UTD President Dr. Prabhas Moghe addressed the crowd, noting that a hot move‑in day is preferable to a cold one. “I earned my PhD at the University of Minnesota, walking to graduate school in sub‑zero wind chill. I’d take this heat over that any day,” he said, underscoring the university’s commitment to student safety while maintaining the schedule.

Roughly 4,000 students are expected to move into campus housing this week, and university staff are coordinating closely with families to keep the process orderly and safe.

Fire Danger Amid Dry Conditions

The combination of high temperatures and low humidity raises the risk of grass fires and larger wildfires across the region. On Tuesday afternoon, a grass fire erupted on Pioneer Drive near DFW Airport in Irving. The Irving Fire Department reported that the blaze consumed several acres and was about 90 % contained after a rapid response.

Earlier in the week, fires in Arlington destroyed multiple businesses, a vacant home in South Dallas was lost, and a separate blaze in Parker County resulted in three fatalities. These incidents highlight the heightened fire danger that accompanies the ongoing heat wave.

What Residents Can Expect

Forecasters indicate that the next chance for rain or a weak frontal boundary will not arrive until Friday, leaving the ridge of high pressure to sustain above‑normal temperatures into the following week. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and remain vigilant for fire‑related alerts.

Local authorities continue to monitor conditions closely. The Dallas Fire‑Rescue Department advises anyone spotting a fire to call 911 immediately and to keep windows and doors closed when possible to reduce indoor heat buildup.

Looking Ahead

While the heat warning is set to expire on Wednesday evening, the National Weather Service expects the extreme heat pattern to persist. Community leaders and university officials are coordinating to provide resources such as cooling centers and public information to help residents cope with the prolonged heat.

For ongoing updates, residents should follow local weather broadcasts, the National Weather Service’s alerts, and announcements from the University of Texas at Dallas.
