Experts Weigh In: Alkaline Water’s Health Benefits Remain Uncertain

Alkaline water has become a trendy alternative to regular drinking water, with celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Mark Wahlberg endorsing it. However, experts suggest that the purported health benefits are not well-supported by scientific evidence. According to the Mayo Clinic, alkaline water is often enhanced with minerals such as calcium and magnesium to achieve a higher pH level, above the neutral pH of 7.

Health Claims and Scientific Scrutiny

Some proponents claim that alkaline water can neutralize body acidity and prevent health issues like cancer and stroke. There is also some evidence suggesting it might slow bone loss due to its calcium content. Additionally, studies have indicated that alkaline water, when combined with a plant-based Mediterranean diet, may alleviate acid reflux symptoms.

Despite these claims, the Mayo Clinic emphasizes the need for more research to confirm these benefits over time. Harvard Medical School’s Dr. Howard E. LeWine notes that any increase in stomach fluid pH from alkaline water is temporary, as the body’s natural mechanisms quickly restore balance.

Potential Risks and Dietary Recommendations

While alkaline water might offer short-term relief for acid reflux, Dr. LeWine advises that more effective treatments, such as antacids, are available. He also warns that alkaline water could pose risks for individuals taking stomach acid blockers or those with kidney disease, as it may alter blood chemical levels.

Certified holistic nutritionist Robin DeCicco points out that there is no strong evidence supporting long-term health benefits from alkaline water. She recommends focusing on foundational dietary habits, such as consuming real foods and avoiding excess sugar and processed items, to manage body acidity effectively.

For those dealing with acid reflux, DeCicco advises consulting a doctor and adopting healthy eating habits, like consistent meal timing and avoiding lying down after eating.
