John Yoo, a well-known conservative lawyer and expert on presidential power, will assist a Justice Department investigation into former high-ranking federal officials who were involved in investigations of President Donald Trump.
Investigation Details
Yoo, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley, will act as an intermittent consultant on constitutional issues for the investigation, which is being led by conservative attorneys Joe DiGenova and Victoria Toensing in the Southern District of Florida.
The investigation has theorized a yearslong conspiracy against President Trump and is looking at possible cases against his foes, including former CIA Director John Brennan. Yoo’s addition to the investigation is likely to raise new questions about the scope and direction of the probe.
Yoo is a national security specialist with experience on the law around presidential power and a proponent of expanding authority for the executive branch. He previously served as the head of the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel under President George W. Bush.
