Former NFL player Jay Feely took a significant step towards becoming a United States congressman representing a district that includes parts of Phoenix and most of Scottsdale by winning the Arizona Republican primary on Tuesday night.

Feely defeated former state Rep. Joseph Chaplik and businessman John Trobough in a race where he had the endorsement of President Donald Trump but was accused by his opponents of not being conservative enough. Feely will face the winner of a still-uncalled Democrat primary between former state Rep. Amish Shah and former broadcast journalist Marlene Galán-Woods in the general election.

Feely, making his first bid for public office at age 50, was well-funded for his primary battle, with contributions from the sports world, including NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who donated $7,000, the legal maximum for an individual. Other notable donors included Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, and former quarterbacks John Elway and Trent Green.

Feely’s campaign focused on his desire to leave the country better for future generations and his opposition to the Democrat Party’s shift towards Democratic socialism. He emphasized the importance of preserving the country’s foundation and preventing changes that could harm its greatness.
