Summer construction crews across the Eugene and Springfield school districts completed a series of visible upgrades that will be evident to teachers, students and parents when classes resume in September. The projects, funded largely by bond measures approved in recent years, focus on climate comfort, modernized play areas and enhanced hands‑on learning facilities.
Bethel’s Danebo Elementary gets air‑conditioning and a new wing
At Danebo Elementary in the Bethel School District, workers installed air‑conditioning units in classrooms, the library and office spaces. The district also began the first phase of a new gym and classroom addition on the south side of the building. The $14 million expansion is one of the final large projects financed by the district’s nearly $100 million bond passed in 2020. Bond manager Pat Bradshaw said the multi‑purpose room, formerly the gym, should have a new floor and cafeteria improvements completed before the first day of school.
Exterior work includes a fresh coat of paint, a new digital sign for the front of the school and the relocation of the historic wooden sign featuring a Viking boat to the cafeteria for preservation.
Additional Bethel district upgrades
- Irving Elementary – air‑conditioning added to classrooms and offices; life‑skills classroom renovated.
- Meadow View School – two renovated classrooms for students with disabilities, accessible bathrooms, changing tables and a fenced‑off playground area, plus a new kitchen floor.
4J district invests $30 million in facilities
The Eugene 4J district allocated roughly $30 million from bond and capital project funds to improve both indoor and outdoor facilities. Security cameras were installed at every building and parking lot, and parking areas received upgrades.
Air‑conditioning units were placed in Awbrey Park, Buena Vista, Charlemagne, Edgewood, Spring Creek, Willagillespie and Twin Oaks elementary schools, as well as Kelly, Kennedy and Monroe middle schools. Installation will continue into the fall, with priority given to rooms where students spend the most time.
Playground improvements include new equipment and shelters at Awbrey Park, Edgewood, McCornack and Willagillespie elementary schools. The district plans to have updated playgrounds and shelters at all elementary schools by the end of the summer, completing a two‑year effort.
Other notable projects:
- Swede Johnson Stadium at North Eugene High School – new seats and fresh paint.
- Arts and Technology Academy and Madison Middle School – new rubberized track surfaces.
- McCornack Elementary – new gym floor.
Springfield schools focus on greenhouse and safety upgrades
Thurston High School will welcome a renovated greenhouse in September. The Springfield Education Foundation contributed $26,553 toward the renovation, which replaced exterior walls and the roof, upgraded electrical and ventilation systems, and added year‑round plumbing, an irrigation system and paved walkways to improve accessibility.
Springfield Public Schools also completed a $460 000 security‑system upgrade, roof and fence repairs, bathroom stall replacements and gym‑floor refinishing at various sites.
Additional summer projects included the removal of the playground at Springfield High School, fresh paint applied to classrooms, kitchens, bathrooms and offices at twelve schools, deep‑cleaning of the district’s Sky Camp event space in Fall Creek, and a new concession‑stand counter at Silke Field.
What these improvements mean for families
For parents and students, the upgrades address everyday concerns: comfortable indoor temperatures during Oregon’s warm summer months, safe and modern play environments, and expanded opportunities for hands‑on science learning in a functional greenhouse. The projects also reflect the districts’ continued use of bond funding to maintain and improve school facilities without raising taxes.
District officials anticipate that the completed work will enhance student morale, support instructional goals and demonstrate responsible stewardship of public resources.
