The Esquire Tavern, a San Antonio institution, has a new majority owner. Stephan Mendez, the tavern’s longtime operator and beverage director, has taken the reins from architect and developer Chris Hill.
A New Chapter for the Esquire
Hill, who has owned the establishment since 2011, will remain a minority partner. Mendez has been with the Esquire for over a dozen years, working his way up from back bartender to head bartender to bar manager to beverage director.
Mendez said he’s excited to carry on the legacy of the Esquire, which has been a part of San Antonio’s history since 1933. The tavern features a century-old wooden bar top, a restored River-level lounge and patio, and a full menu of pub fare, beer, spirits, wine, and cocktails.
The Esquire has been a staple of the San Antonio River Walk, and Mendez plans to continue its tradition of serving high-quality drinks and food to the community.
