ESPN to Remove BottomLine Score Ticker from College Football Broadcasts

ESPN announced that, beginning with the upcoming college football season, the network will no longer display its “BottomLine” score ticker during any college football broadcast. The decision applies to all ESPN channels that carry the sport, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and the streaming platform ESPN+.

Network explains the change

According to a report from Yahoo Sports, ESPN’s programming team is seeking to “streamline the college football viewer experience” by removing the ticker. The network argues that fans can obtain real‑time scores and updates through mobile devices, team apps and other digital platforms, making the on‑screen ticker less essential.

Previous removals

ESPN has already phased out the BottomLine ticker for other live events. The ticker was removed from College Football Playoff broadcasts in recent years and from NBA postseason coverage earlier this season. The network says those changes were well‑received by viewers who preferred an unobstructed view of the action.

Fan reaction mixed

Social media responses have been divided. Some viewers welcome the cleaner screen, noting that they can check scores on their phones without a visual distraction. Others miss the familiar on‑screen alerts, such as “UPSET ALERT,” that have become part of the college football tradition. A handful of commenters have labeled the removal a “boomer” move, while others argue that the ticker occupied roughly eight percent of the screen and could detract from the game.

Impact on the viewing experience

For fans who rely on the ticker for quick updates, ESPN suggests using its official app, which provides live scores, play‑by‑play commentary and push notifications. The network also plans to enhance its on‑air graphics package with occasional on‑screen highlights, though these will not be a constant presence throughout the broadcast.

What this means for college football

The change reflects a broader trend in sports broadcasting toward digital integration. As more viewers shift to smartphones and tablets for real‑time information, networks are re‑evaluating the necessity of traditional on‑screen graphics. ESPN’s move may influence other broadcasters to consider similar adjustments for their own sports properties.

College football fans can expect the first games of the season to air without the BottomLine ticker, and ESPN will monitor audience feedback to determine whether any further graphics modifications are needed.
