Erin Thornton pledges $1 million to sustain Texas Tribune’s public‑news mission

Erin Thornton announced a $1 million pledge to the Texas Tribune, the nonprofit newsroom she and her late husband, founder John Thornton, built as a public‑good institution. Half of the gift – $500,000 – will be used as a matching fund for a new campaign that encourages donors to double their contributions, up to $500,000.

Building on a legacy of public‑service journalism

John Thornton seeded the Texas Tribune with $1 million of his own capital in 2008, launching the newsroom in 2009. He viewed journalism as essential infrastructure for democracy, comparable to roads or schools. After his death in March 2025, Erin said she is “amplifying his vision now, in the present, the way he saw it so long before any of us did.”

The newly created John Thornton Founding Fund will be invested for the long term, providing a financial cushion that allows the Tribune to innovate and expand its reporting. “Local news is closest to the people it’s serving,” Erin explained. “It is—and must be—the foundation for building and sustaining a better democratic system, one built on the idea that journalism is a public good.”

Matching campaign to rally community support

The matching component of the pledge means every donation made during the campaign will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $500,000. This structure mirrors the community‑building model that helped launch the Tribune 17 years ago and is intended to engage both longtime supporters and first‑time donors.

Tribune CEO Sarah Adler Hartman praised the gift, noting that “the act of founding doesn’t only happen in the beginning. For the strongest, most sustainable organizations, it happens perpetually—a constant state of reinvention and realization.” The matching campaign is slated to launch later this year.

Transparency and nonprofit status

The Texas Tribune remains a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization funded by members, foundations, and corporate sponsors. Financial supporters do not influence editorial decisions. Erin Thornton has been a major donor in the past, and the American Journalism Project has also contributed within the last five years.

This infusion of capital aims to ensure the Tribune can continue to serve Texas readers with high‑quality, locally focused reporting, reinforcing the belief that a free press is a cornerstone of a thriving democracy.
