ERCOT Predicts Record Electric Demand in Texas This Summer

As summer approaches, ERCOT, the operator of Texas’ power grid, is forecasting unprecedented electricity demand. This surge is driven by high temperatures and the rapid expansion of data centers and other large projects. Officials estimate that demand could exceed 92 gigawatts, surpassing the previous record of 85.5 gigawatts set in August 2023.

Despite the anticipated increase, ERCOT officials are confident that the grid will hold up. Nearly 11 gigawatts of additional power capacity have been integrated into the grid recently, reducing the likelihood of emergencies or blackouts. ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas stated that the current capacity is adequate, with only a 0.09% chance of a grid emergency in June and a 0.21% chance in July.

Energy Sources and Risk Management

Texas leads the nation in solar power capacity, which has been instrumental in meeting energy demands during peak hours. Since last summer, the state has added nearly 5 gigawatts of battery storage, 4 gigawatts of solar power, and 1.5 gigawatts of natural gas capacity. However, ERCOT relies on natural gas and batteries during the evening when solar power is less available.

The weather outlook remains uncertain, with the potential for temperatures to rival those of 2023, Texas’ second-hottest summer on record. The extent of the heat will depend on rainfall patterns following a wet spring. Drought conditions could worsen in some regions, with varying levels of dryness reported across the state.

Legislative Measures

Senate Bill 6, enacted in 2025, plays a crucial role in preventing grid emergencies. The law mandates that large electric consumers, such as data centers, maintain backup power and switch to these reserves during emergencies. ERCOT can instruct these facilities to reduce power consumption if grid conditions tighten.

State Sen. Phil King emphasized the importance of SB 6 in avoiding a repeat of the 2021 Winter Storm Uri, which resulted in significant loss of life and widespread power outages. The legislation ensures that power is maintained in residential areas during extreme weather events.
