The former Ave Maria School in Ellsworth has been repurposed as a new education center for students with autism. Merakey, a provider of special education and human services, held an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the center, which will begin classes on August 24.
Services and Facilities
The center will provide autism and emotional support and therapy services, including sensory-friendly environments, special lighting and desks, and lower student-to-teacher ratios. The building has the capacity for eight classrooms and 21 students.
Community members toured the school, met staff, and learned about the services it provides. Six students are currently enrolled in the nonprofit school, which is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Community Support
Washington County Chamber of Commerce president Jeff Kotula and state Sen. Camera Bartolotta were among the guests at the ribbon cutting, which also included remarks from Merakey staff. The center is located at 3 Oak St. in Ellsworth and occupies the former Ave Maria School.
