Elliana Young Shares Journey to State High Jump Title

Wylie East High School junior Elliana Young recently achieved a significant milestone by winning the Class 6A state title in the girls high jump. Her journey to this accomplishment is a testament to perseverance and adaptability.

From Gymnastics to High Jump

Elliana initially planned to pursue gymnastics and tumbling in college, following a decade-long involvement with Texas Dynamix. However, a growth spurt in middle school led her coaches to suggest she was too tall for gymnastics. This shift left her heartbroken, but she remained determined to find her athletic passion.

After trying basketball and soccer without the same enthusiasm, Elliana decided to explore track and field in seventh grade at McMillan Junior High. Although initially reluctant to try the high jump, her coach, Brittany Gray, recognized her potential and encouraged her to give it a shot. This decision proved pivotal, as Elliana quickly excelled, jumping 5 feet in her first meet and reaching 5-2 by the end of middle school.

Overcoming Challenges

Elliana’s high school career continued to build on her early success. As a sophomore, she narrowly missed qualifying for the state meet, finishing fourth at the Region II-6A meet. This year, despite battling the flu, she persevered to secure her first state qualification by placing second at regionals.

At the state meet in Austin, Elliana faced a new challenge: strong winds. She remained focused, drawing on her experience with various weather conditions, and adjusted her technique accordingly. Her efforts led to a neck-and-neck competition with Comal Canyon’s Sophia Martinez and Houston Memorial’s Cate Bryant. All three athletes cleared heights up to 5-6 but missed at 5-8, resulting in a three-way tie for the state title.

A Shared Victory

Initially expecting a jump-off to determine the winner, Elliana and her competitors were surprised when officials declared them co-state champions. While Elliana believed she could have won a jump-off, she was pleased to share the victory with her fellow athletes, acknowledging their hard work.

Reflecting on her journey, Elliana expressed gratitude for her middle school coach’s guidance. “I’m glad she encouraged me to try the high jump,” she said. “Otherwise, I might not have made it to state.” Her story is an inspiring reminder of the importance of resilience and adaptability in achieving one’s goals.
