Scientists from the United States have documented, for the first time, that Asian elephants can exercise inhibitory control – the ability to suppress an impulse in favor of a more effective action. The findings, published in the journal PLOS One, come from experiments conducted with sixteen elephants at the National Elephant Institute in Thailand.
How the test worked
Each elephant was presented with a transparent box containing fruit that could be seen and smelled through small holes. Rather than reaching directly for the treat, the animals consistently used a side opening they had been taught earlier. When the box was rotated, the elephants initially reached for the previous opening location before quickly correcting their behavior.
Age‑related differences
Older elephants were slower to adjust, suggesting a possible decline in cognitive flexibility with age. The researchers caution that further study is needed to confirm this trend.
Implications for conservation
Co‑author Joshua Plotnik of City University of New York noted that understanding how elephants make decisions and manage risk can improve strategies for human‑elephant coexistence. “The more we understand about how elephants think, make decisions about risk, and adapt to human‑driven environmental change, the better we can predict what they’ll do next and design effective conservation measures,” he said.
Study co‑author Sydney Hope of Hunter College added that the ability to suppress impulsive actions may be crucial for elephants’ social interactions and problem‑solving abilities, further underscoring the importance of cognitive research for wildlife management.
Future directions
The team hopes that insights into elephant cognition will help reduce conflicts between elephants and nearby human communities, especially in parts of Asia where the two share increasingly overlapping landscapes.
