EL PASO, Texas — The TxDOT El Paso District is observing National Work Zone Awareness Week beginning today and continuing through Friday, April 24. The week is focused on reminding drivers to slow down, stay alert and follow posted directions whenever they approach highway construction and maintenance zones.

Local transportation officials are working with neighboring agencies and law enforcement to raise awareness about safety in work areas. A morning press event kicked off the observance, drawing attention to the hazards workers face near moving traffic and to the shared responsibility of motorists to help prevent crashes.

Work zones often involve narrowed lanes, changed traffic patterns, flaggers, and heavy equipment moving close to traffic. Because conditions can change quickly, drivers are urged to reduce speed, keep a safe following distance, refrain from using mobile devices, and obey temporary signs and signals.
