El Paso’s own Esteban Hernandez recently returned home after an 11-month deployment with the U.S. Navy, offering a glimpse into the life of a local hero. Growing up in a military family, Hernandez was inspired by his father, a Marine Corps Reserve veteran, and his uncle, who also served in the Navy. From a young age, Hernandez was determined to follow in their footsteps.
A Family Tradition of Service
Hernandez’s journey began at Eastwood High School, where he was active in the National Honor Society and Junior ROTC. His commitment to serving his country was evident early on, as his mother, Anita Hernandez, recalls him expressing his military aspirations since third grade. After graduating in 2024, he joined the Navy, continuing the legacy of service upheld by his father, grandfather, and uncles.
His deployment was marked by significant events, including the aftermath of the U.S. capturing Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and the onset of the war in Iran. Despite the challenges and the loneliness of being away from family, Hernandez remained steadfast, supported by daily letters from his father.
Challenges and Sacrifices
During his time away, Hernandez missed important family events, such as his sister’s wedding and his uncle’s funeral. His mother shared the emotional toll of these absences, highlighting the sacrifices made by military families. Hernandez himself noted the difficulty of watching life continue through a screen while he was stationed far from home.
Upon his return, Hernandez was warmly welcomed by his family, an emotional reunion that underscored the deep bonds of love and support. His mother described the joy of seeing the ship return, a moment she hopes to experience again.
Now back on duty in Jacksonville, Hernandez is preparing for another deployment, ready to continue serving his country with pride. His story is a testament to the dedication and resilience of those in the armed forces, and a reminder of the sacrifices made by service members and their families.
The community of El Paso stands proud of Esteban Hernandez, grateful for his service and the values he embodies.
