The El Paso Convention Center is buzzing with excitement as it hosts the Wheels and Ink Expo, a two-day event celebrating the vibrant culture of custom cars and tattoo artistry. Running from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, the expo offers a unique blend of automotive craftsmanship, live music, and personal expression through tattoos.
Celebrating Local Talent and Creativity
Upon entering the convention center, attendees are greeted by a dazzling display of designer cars. These vehicles, complete with custom paint jobs, hydraulics, and rims, are a testament to the skill and creativity of their owners. Many car enthusiasts are eager to share the stories behind their vehicles, often opening the hoods to reveal the powerful engines that drive them.
In another section of the venue, live music fills the air, providing a lively backdrop to the event. This musical element adds to the festive atmosphere, drawing in visitors who appreciate both the auditory and visual arts.
Tattoo Artistry as Personal Expression
The expo also dedicates significant space to tattoo artistry, with numerous stations set up for artists to showcase their skills. Michael Drake Salazar, one of the featured tattoo artists, views his craft as a form of self-expression. “It’s one way to express, but also like how what I’m doing right now, speaking, it’s just one way of expressing,” Salazar shared. “Also like, some type of clothing, some type of even slang to connect with other people.”
Another artist, Alexis Rosales, highlights the non-traditional path she took after high school, choosing to pursue her passion for drawing and tattoos instead of attending college. “I didn’t want to go to college after high school. I was never a school school girly,” Rosales explained. “I was always good at drawing and I always wanted to be tatted up. I absolutely love it.”
Eric Hernandez, a local resident attending the expo, shared the personal significance of his tattoos. Each piece of ink tells a story, from the sleeve representing his children to a tribute to his military friends and a symbol of his bond with his brothers.
