El Paso City Launches $50,000 Youth Climate Action Fund for Young Leaders

The City of El Paso announced a new $50,000 Youth Climate Action Fund, part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative, to empower local teens and young adults to address climate challenges in their neighborhoods.

How the fund works

Eligible projects must be proposed, planned, and carried out by at least two young people between the ages of 15 and 24. Grants range from $1,000 to $5,000 and must align with one or more priorities of the city’s Chihuahuan Desert Climate Action Plan, such as climate education, heat‑ and water‑resilience, green infrastructure, community gardens, sustainable food systems, waste reduction, or sustainable transportation.

Applicants are required to secure a fiscal sponsor—such as a nonprofit, school, youth‑serving organization, public agency, or another eligible community group—through which the grant funds will be received and administered.

Application timeline and support

Applications are being accepted now and will be reviewed through October 23, 2026. All funded projects must be completed by April 15, 2027. To help prospective applicants, the city will host three free workshops that cover idea development, application requirements, and how to connect with potential partners and fiscal sponsors. Workshops run from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on dates announced on the city’s website.

For full application materials, eligibility criteria, project guidelines, and additional information, interested youth can visit EPClimate.org/Get-Involved.

Why the fund matters

El Paso is one of roughly 300 cities worldwide selected for the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund. By providing seed money directly to young innovators, the city aims to foster grassroots solutions that improve resilience, reduce waste, and promote sustainable living in the desert environment that defines the region.

Mayor‑appointed officials emphasized that empowering the next generation aligns with the city’s broader commitment to stewardship of natural resources and the well‑being of families. The fund also reflects a partnership between local government and private philanthropy to address climate impacts without imposing burdensome regulations on businesses or homeowners.

Community leaders expressed optimism that youth‑led projects will not only deliver tangible environmental benefits but also strengthen civic engagement among young residents, reinforcing the city’s tradition of family‑centered, faith‑informed community building.
