President Donald Trump recently claimed that egg prices are lower than when he returned to office in January 2025, and that ‘everything else’ is also lower. However, according to federal Consumer Price Index figures, this is not the case. While egg prices have indeed decreased by 32.7% between January 2025 and June 2026, overall consumer prices have risen by 4.3% over the same period.
Price Increases Across Various Categories
Food prices have increased by 4.2%, with notable rises in the prices of lettuce (32.6%), coffee (22.6%), and uncooked ground beef (19.9%). Shelter costs have also gone up by 4.6%, and energy prices have risen by 13.1%, with electricity and gasoline prices increasing by 8.3% and 15.2%, respectively. Medical care services, apparel, tuition, and household furnishings have also seen price increases.
The decrease in egg prices can be attributed to a bird flu outbreak in 2024, which led to a spike in egg prices. However, as the outbreak subsided, egg prices began to return to normal levels. Despite this, other grocery prices have continued to rise, with overall grocery prices increasing by 3.4%.
