Edmond YMCA Pools Close Early

The Mitch Park YMCA in Edmond has been closing its pools at noon since last week due to air conditioning problems, with a temporary fix expected by Aug. 2. The aquatic center is a joint venture between the YMCA, Edmond Public Schools, and the city of Edmond.

Impact on Local Swim Teams

The pools are incredibly important to both people living in the area but also local swim teams. The closed once again at noon on Sunday, meaning many of those teams don’t have another place to go.

Rachel Scorpecci, whose team competes at the pools, expressed concerns about the air quality, saying, “We’ve had some swimmers just step out of the meet completely. I scratched some of my events as well. We’ve had one swimmer be sent to the hospital because of the air quality, and now we’re just hoping before our season starts and we have a lot of meets there that it gets fixed so that we can actually like race.”

Robert Eisenhauer, a YMCA member, also expressed frustration over the delays, saying, “Mechanical failures happen. This is a big building. Those are big machines. Machines always break down. Yeah, I don’t know if it was budgeted to be repaired, but I think this is about 12 years old, so it’s getting, probably, toward the end of its lifespan.”

The city of Edmond is set to discuss potential solutions during its city council meeting Monday night.
