What kind of sporting goods store has a working Ferris wheel inside it? That’s usually the first question someone asks when they hear about SCHEELS for the first time, and honestly it’s a fair place to start. But the Ferris wheel is almost beside the point.
The SCHEELS at Frisco’s Stonebriar area — off Preston Road near the 121 — is technically a sporting goods retailer. At roughly 250,000 square feet, it’s the kind of place that swallows an afternoon before you notice. Which is either a warning or a recommendation, depending on your disposition.
Walk in expecting a Bass Pro or a Dick’s and you’ll be disoriented within three minutes. The store organizes itself into what the company calls “shops” — dedicated sections for fishing, hunting, golf, cycling, camping, and about a dozen other pursuits, each staffed by people who actually do the thing they’re selling. Ask a question about fly fishing leaders in that section and you will get an actual answer, not a shrug toward an aisle number. That part is genuinely useful and not something you can take for granted in big-box retail.
The Ferris wheel — yes, it’s real, yes, it’s free to ride — sits roughly in the center of the store, flanked by a saltwater aquarium and a small wildlife habitat display with mounted animals. There’s also a candy shop near the front, which sounds like a gimmick until you see the line of adults at the fudge counter. SCHEELS leans into the whole “destination” thing without apparent embarrassment, and after a while, you stop fighting it.
The sports apparel section is serious business: Cowboys, Rangers, FC Dallas, Stars, and Frisco-adjacent college gear cover more floor space than most standalone fan shops. If you need a specific jersey or a hard-to-find cap, this is frequently the only local option that doesn’t require waiting a week for shipping.
The fitness floor is worth mentioning. Treadmills, bikes, weight equipment — they let you actually try the machines before you spend real money on them. There’s a shoe department that fits you properly, with staff who watch you walk rather than just handing you a box. Again, obvious in theory, rare in practice.
Pricing is more or less what you’d find online for the same brands. Don’t come expecting discounts; come expecting selection and people who know what they’re talking about. The store validates that trade-off better than most.
Best time to go is a weekday morning — Saturday afternoons bring families who treat it like an outing, which it kind of is, and the Ferris wheel line gets longer than you’d expect. Parking is ample. The store opens at 9 a.m. most days.
If you’re driving up from Dallas or down from Allen and you need outdoor or athletic gear, SCHEELS is probably the most complete single stop in the region. If you’re just curious about the Ferris wheel, that’s a reasonable excuse too. The candy is decent.
