Hexe Haus, a gathering place for pagans, brujas, and the spiritually curious in Edgewater, is closing its doors after 35 years in business. The shop, which has been more than just a retail store, has served as a community center for those interested in witchcraft and paganism.
A Community Hub
Co-owner Dayna Garcia described Hexe Haus as a ‘witchcraft and pagan community center disguised as a retail store.’ The shop has hosted discussions on various topics, including aliens and alternate dimensions, every Wednesday night for the last three years. Garcia said the community was always the point, and the merchandise just supported the mission.
Regulars at the shop, such as Tanya R. and Mae, have formed close relationships with one another, describing the shop as a ‘third space’ where they can develop additional relationships with like-minded individuals. Mae, who started attending the discussions about a year ago, even met her partner Brandon Sosa at one of the shop’s Ouija board nights.
A New Chapter
Although the physical location is closing, the community built through Hexe Haus will continue. Garcia has started the International Pagan Society, a nonprofit dedicated to creating educational opportunities and community events for the pagan community. The shop is holding a 50 percent off liquidation sale before it closes.
