Edgartown swimmer treated for suspected shark bite at South Beach

Emergency responders on Martha’s Vineyard acted quickly Monday when a swimmer at South Beach in Edgartown, Massachusetts, suffered a wound that appears to be the result of a shark bite. The victim, a woman in her late 20s, was in the water when she felt a sharp injury to her lower leg.

Town officials assess the incident

Town Administrator James Hagerty released a statement confirming that the nature of the injuries matches what would be expected from a shark bite. He emphasized that the wounds are not life‑threatening and did not involve loss of a limb. After receiving initial treatment on site, the woman was transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

Precautionary beach closure

In line with town protocol, Edgartown officials temporarily suspended swimming at South Beach while marine experts and safety personnel evaluated the situation. The closure lasted several hours, allowing authorities to survey the water and ensure no immediate danger remained. Once conditions were deemed safe, the beach reopened to the public.

Community response and safety reminders

The town expressed gratitude to the emergency crews, lifeguards, and beach staff for their swift response. Hagerty reminded beachgoers to stay aware of their surroundings, follow lifeguard instructions, and heed any posted advisories. He noted that while shark encounters are rare in the area, vigilance is essential for everyone enjoying the shoreline.

Shark activity in the region

Historical data shows that confirmed shark attacks near Martha’s Vineyard are uncommon. Most serious or fatal incidents in Massachusetts over the past two decades have occurred along the nearby Cape Cod coast, a well‑known hotspot for great white sharks attracted by the region’s large gray seal population. Cape Cod lies about two hours’ drive from Edgartown.

What residents can do

Local officials encourage swimmers to stay informed about marine‑wildlife reports and to report any unusual sightings to town authorities. By working together, the community can maintain a safe and enjoyable beach environment while respecting the natural marine ecosystem.
