East Los Angeles businesses impacted by the recent crude oil spill can submit compensation claims for losses they suffered when 2,400 gallons of oil spilled onto streets, forcing road closures last month, LA County officials said.
Claims Process
The Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity will provide direct assistance to businesses impacted by the May 22 spill. Businesses that experienced financial losses, property damage, cleanup-related expenses, or disruptions in operations may be eligible to file a claim for compensation through the Pacific Pipeline System LLC (PPS), county officials said.
Business owners can call 877-817-5465 or email [email protected] to start the claims process. LA County’s Office of Small Businesses can also help business owners through the process and submit claims. Those seeking assistance must include a specific dollar amount and supporting documentation in their application.
Records that may be needed include business licenses, financial statements, sales reports, bank statements, photographs of damage, canceled contracts, payroll records, repair estimates, and cleanup receipts.
Community Impact
An oil pipeline ruptured last month when a communications crew working on a fiber optic line struck the pipeline, spilling crude oil onto the road near East Cesar Chavez and North Eastern Avenues as well as into the Los Angeles River. Community members, business owners, the river, and even several wildlife species, such as birds, were affected by the incident.
