Eagle Scouts Create Tiles for Dementia-Friendly Garden

In a heartwarming display of intergenerational collaboration, local Boy Scouts and seniors at the Lexington Senior Center have come together to create a dementia-friendly sensory garden at Idle Hour Park.

A Labor of Love

The project, which began as an Eagle Scout initiative, has grown into a months-long endeavor, with scouts and seniors working side-by-side to design and craft over 160 ceramic tiles.

The tiles, which feature various textures and even braille, are designed to engage visitors’ senses and provide a unique experience for those living with dementia.

According to scoutmaster DJ Rose, the experience has brought the two generations closer together, with seniors teaching scouts new skills and scouts working alongside them.

The garden, which is designed to stimulate all five senses, now features the handmade tiles, adding a new dimension to the space.

For Malachi Rose, a Boy Scout involved in the project, the transformation is clear: ‘Without this, it looks just like dull and gray, but now it brings more life,’ he said.

The project has not only created a beautiful garden but has also fostered a sense of community and connection between the scouts and seniors.
