Duxbury murder trial: mother claims postpartum psychosis drove her to kill children

Duxbury, Mass. – The murder trial of 36‑year‑old Lindsay Clancy entered a new phase this week as her defense team presented evidence that she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis when she allegedly strangled her three children, ages under six, in 2023.

Trial background

Clancy faces three counts of first‑degree murder for the deaths of Cora, Dawson and Callan, whose bodies were discovered at the family home in Duxbury last year. The prosecution rested its case on Monday, focusing on the physical evidence and the timeline of the killings.

Defense testimony

Clinical and forensic psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel testified that after the killings, Clancy told her then‑husband, Patrick, that she had heard a male voice commanding her to kill the children and then herself. Zeizel said Clancy appeared honest and showed no signs of malingering, describing her as an “honest citizen” who was unable to express much emotion but repeatedly expressed love for her husband.

When asked whether Clancy might be fabricating her symptoms, defense attorney Kevin Reddington emphasized the lack of evidence for deception and highlighted the compassionate context in which Clancy was allowed to call her husband from the hospital.

Family perspective

Susan Clancy, Lindsay’s mother‑in‑law, testified that she had been concerned about Lindsay’s mental health during the 2022 holiday season, describing her as a “wonderful mother” who was “very nurturing, very loving” but also “struggling” and “begging for help.”

Legal focus on mental health

The defense is urging jurors to consider postpartum psychosis—a rare, severe mental‑health condition that can emerge after childbirth—as a mitigating factor. Postpartum psychosis can involve hallucinations, delusional thinking, and extreme mood swings, and experts say it can impair a mother’s ability to make rational decisions.

Prosecutors, however, maintain that the evidence points to premeditated murder, noting the method of strangulation and the lack of any prior documented mental‑health treatment.

Community impact

The case has resonated deeply in the Duxbury community, where neighbors recall the Clancy family as close‑knit and active. Local churches and support groups have offered prayers and counseling resources for families dealing with mental‑health crises.

Authorities continue to remind anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts or severe mental‑health distress to contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1‑800‑273‑TALK (8255).
