Dutch Grand Prix may serve as future F1 backup amid Middle East schedule uncertainty

The Dutch Grand Prix will hold its final race of the 2026 season on Sunday, but organizers are already positioning Zandvoort as a potential backup venue for future Formula 1 events. In a statement to the Associated Press, the race’s organizing committee said the circuit’s FIA Grade 1 license remains valid for three more years, allowing it to step in should another Grand Prix be cancelled because of geopolitical circumstances.

Geopolitical factors shaping the calendar

Security concerns stemming from the ongoing Iran war have already forced major changes to the 2026 schedule. Bahrain’s race was relocated to Malaysia, and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was cancelled outright. Formula 1 officials have indicated that at least one additional European race could be added if the season‑ending events in Qatar and Abu Dhabi cannot proceed as planned.

Imola in Italy is currently the most likely candidate for such an extra European round, but the organization notes that many logistical factors—including permits, equipment availability, and preparation time—must be addressed before any concrete decision is made.

Financial stakes for Zandvoort

Zandvoort is a rare example of a privately run Grand Prix that does not rely on government subsidies. The race requires roughly €75 million (about $87.6 million) each year to erect temporary grandstands and other infrastructure needed to accommodate tens of thousands of fans along the seaside circuit. Because the event must be financially self‑sustaining, selling out tickets remains critical.

The Dutch Grand Prix returned to the Formula 1 calendar in 2021 after a 36‑year hiatus, largely thanks to the popularity of four‑time champion Max Verstappen, who recently signed a contract extension through 2030. In 2024, organizers declined a contract extension, citing “risks and responsibilities” and a desire to end on a high note.

Potential weather challenges

Adding a European race after the Las Vegas Grand Prix on November 21 would likely expose teams and spectators to colder conditions than most other events on the calendar. Williams team principal James Vowles said that if Imola were selected, the weather would be “interesting and spicy,” but still a welcome return to a European venue at the season’s end.

Teams’ perspective

Drivers and teams say the uncertainty does not affect their preparation. George Russell and Lando Norris both emphasized that they remain focused on their performance regardless of where the season concludes. Norris joked, “I’m not even thinking of what I’m going to do on Monday yet,” while Russell added, “I prefer more races than fewer. That’s the only thing I would wish for.”

Broader implications

The situation highlights how Formula 1 must remain flexible amid shifting geopolitical landscapes. The sport’s agreement to return to Malaysia in October involved negotiations with the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia to preserve Bahrain’s branding while designating Malaysia as the host venue. As the 2027 calendar takes shape, the fate of the four contracted Middle East races remains uncertain, and Zandvoort’s potential role as a contingency venue underscores the importance of adaptable planning for the sport’s global schedule.
