Durham firefighters are taking steps to ensure public safety ahead of Independence Day by conducting safety checks at roadside stands and pop-up tents selling fireworks.
Inspections and Enforcement
Assistant Fire Marshal Brandon Link is leading the effort, inspecting products to ensure they are not airborne, such as bottle rockets and roman candles, which are illegal in North Carolina.
Link warns that illegal fireworks can be risky to use, and past crackdowns have yielded tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of illegal fireworks.
North Carolina emergency rooms treat nearly 200 people each year for fireworks-related injuries, with 72% of those injuries happening in July.
