Duke Energy Foundation offers $175,000 of downtown grants for South Carolina communities

The Duke Energy Foundation has unveiled a new Main Street Revitalization program aimed at strengthening the economic heart of South Carolina’s towns and cities. Announced on August 18, the initiative makes $175,000 available for grant awards of up to $10,000 each.

Who can apply

The program is open to government entities – such as city councils, county boards and municipal planning departments – as well as qualified nonprofit organizations that serve local neighborhoods. Applicants must propose projects that create vibrant places where residents can live, work and gather, while also supporting long‑term economic growth in downtown areas.

Types of projects

Eligible projects may include streetscape improvements, façade renovations, public art installations, pedestrian‑friendly lighting, park enhancements, and other upgrades that make commercial corridors more inviting. The goal is to encourage private investment, boost local businesses and provide families with safe, attractive gathering spaces.

Application timeline

Interested parties have until August 31 to submit their proposals. Detailed application instructions and eligibility criteria are posted on the foundation’s website at foundation.duke-energy.com/grants/south-carolina. The foundation encourages applicants to demonstrate how their projects will foster sustainable economic development and improve quality of life for residents.

Impact on local families and faith communities

By targeting downtown districts, the grants aim to revitalize the places where families shop, dine and attend community events, including church gatherings and local festivals. Strong downtowns often serve as hubs for faith‑based organizations, providing space for outreach programs and family‑focused activities.

Supporting the Constitution’s vision of local self‑reliance

The initiative reflects a broader belief in empowering local governments and private charities to address community needs without excessive reliance on state or federal programs. By directing private philanthropy toward local projects, the Duke Energy Foundation aligns with the constitutional principle of local autonomy and the traditional family’s role in building strong neighborhoods.

Looking ahead

While the first round of grants will be awarded after the August 31 deadline, the foundation plans to continue the program in future years if demand remains strong. Community leaders are encouraged to collaborate, pool resources and submit proposals that showcase innovative, family‑friendly solutions for downtown revitalization.
